Cracker Barrel is not the easiest restaurant to navigate when your appetite is small. Much of the menu is built around fried entrées, rich sides, biscuits, gravy, and portions designed to be filling.
But there are simpler orders hiding among the larger comfort-food plates. The grilled chicken portions are especially useful: they provide close to or above 30g of protein without requiring a large meal.
The highest-protein dish is not automatically the best choice, though. Several steak and ham plates come with unusually high sodium, and some vegetable sides contain more fat than their names suggest. Below are four orders with at least 30g of protein, followed by the sides, sauces, and menu items worth checking first.
What to prioritize when your appetite is small
There is no single meal formula that works for everyone taking a GLP-1. Tolerance can change depending on the medication, portion size, and whether your dose was recently increased.
At a restaurant, a practical starting point is a modest portion built around lean protein. It can be harder to get enough protein when you are eating less overall. Fried or very high-fat meals can worsen nausea or prolonged fullness for some people. Fluids and fiber also matter, particularly if constipation has been an issue.
The orders below favor leaner proteins and simpler sides. They are not medical rules. Pay attention to what you tolerate, along with any guidance from your prescriber or dietitian.
Protein options worth knowing
| Item | Calories | Protein | Fat | Sodium | Protein per 100 cal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Egg Whites (side) | 60 | 12g | 0g | 190mg | 20.0 |
| Grilled Chicken Tenders (lunch/dinner) | 320 | 57g | 8g | 730mg | 17.8 |
| Grilled Chicken Tenders (breakfast) | 160 | 28g | 4.5g | 360mg | 17.5 |
| Early Dinner: Smoky Southern Grilled Chicken | 190 | 31g | 5g | 670mg | 16.3 |
| Smokehouse Grilled Chicken | 380 | 62g | 10g | 1,340mg | 16.3 |
| Turkey Sausage | 170 | 24g | 8g | 400mg | 14.1 |
| Country Ham (add-on) | 90 | 12g | 4.5g | 1,020mg | 13.3 |
| Grilled Catfish | 260 | 33g | 15g | 730mg | 12.7 |
| Lemon Pepper Grilled Rainbow Trout | 410 | 39g | 26g | 360mg | 9.5 |
The Early Dinner portion of Smoky Southern Grilled Chicken delivers 31g of protein for 190 calories and 5g of fat, one of the best protein-to-calorie options on the menu. The catch is availability: Early Dinner Deals are generally offered Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. for dine-in orders.
Grilled Chicken Tenders on the breakfast menu are the flexible alternative at 160 calories and 28g of protein, with 360mg of sodium. That is one of the lower-sodium substantial meat portions available.
Grilled Catfish and the Rainbow Trout both carry more fat, 15g and 26g respectively. The trout may feel too rich if you find that higher-fat meals worsen nausea or prolonged fullness.
Four orders
Early Dinner Chicken and Broccoli
The full order comes to 225 calories with 33g of protein and 5g of fat. Its main drawback is the limited early-dinner window.
The All-Day Build
Because breakfast is served all day, this is the more flexible option.
The Breakfast Plate
Turkey sausage is 170 calories for 24g of protein and 8g of fat. Thick-sliced bacon is 190 calories for 13g of protein and 16g of fat. Smoked sausage patties are 240 calories for 14g of protein and 20g of fat.
The Modified Salad
This delivers 40g of protein, but it is not automatically a light order. Ask for the dressing on the side so you can control the portion. Balsamic is not especially light here either, so portion size matters more than which dressing you choose.
The steak plates come with a sodium tradeoff
Some of the highest-protein meals at Cracker Barrel are also among the highest in sodium.
Steak & Eggs provides 80g of protein for 620 calories. It also contains 5,050mg of sodium, more than twice the FDA Daily Value of 2,300mg.
| Item | Protein | Sodium |
|---|---|---|
| Steak & Chicken Combo (grilled) | 98g | 5,570mg |
| Big Easy Steak & Shrimp | 81g | 5,550mg |
| Steak & Eggs | 80g | 5,050mg |
| New York Strip Steak | 67g | 4,900mg |
| Country Ham (8 oz.) | 49g | 4,220mg |
| Chicken Noodle Soup (bowl) | 14g | 3,450mg |
That does not make steak categorically off-limits, and sodium needs differ from person to person. But it is a tradeoff worth knowing, especially for anyone who has been told to limit sodium because of blood pressure, kidney, or heart concerns.
The grilled chicken portions are considerably lower in sodium, which is why most of the builds above use chicken rather than steak or cured ham.
The side choice can change the meal substantially
Lower-fat choices:
| Side | Calories | Fat | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomato Slices | 10 | 0g | 0g |
| Steamed Broccoli | 35 | 0g | 2g |
| Egg Whites | 60 | 0g | 12g |
| Fresh Fruit | 60 | 0g | 0g |
| Turnip Greens | 80 | 3g | 7g |
Higher-fat choices:
| Side | Calories | Fat |
|---|---|---|
| Mashed Potatoes | 220 | 11g |
| Whole Kernel Corn | 170 | 13g |
| Mac & Cheese | 270 | 18g |
| Cole Slaw | 230 | 20g |
| Loaded Baked Potato | 580 | 30g |
Whole kernel corn at 13g of fat is the one most people do not expect. Cole slaw adds 20g of fat to a plate, which can change a 5g fat chicken order considerably.
Sauces and gravy can add more fat than the entrée itself
Serving sizes below reflect what is listed in the nutrition data, and they vary by item.
| Item | Serving | Calories | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown Gravy | 1 oz. | 15 | 1g |
| Balsamic Vinaigrette | 2 oz. | 210 | 21g |
| Comeback Sauce | — | 210 | 22g |
| Sawmill Gravy | 10 oz. | 380 | 26g |
| Nashville Hot | 1.5 oz. | 300 | 31g |
| Buttermilk Ranch | 2.5 oz. | 310 | 32g |
| Blue Cheese Dressing | 2.5 oz. | 340 | 37g |
A 1.5 oz. cup of Nashville Hot sauce carries 31g of fat, more than any grilled entrée on the menu. Note the serving sizes differ, so brown gravy looks light partly because it is measured in a much smaller portion.
Ordering sauces and dressings on the side gives you control over how much you use.
Orders likely to feel especially heavy
| Item | Calories | Fat | Sodium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onion Petals | 970 | 70g | 2,080mg |
| Country Fried Pickles | 1,130 | 82g | 3,830mg |
| The Breakfast Burger | 1,200 | 80g | 2,690mg |
| Nashville Hot Southern Fried Chicken | 2,990 | 218g | 6,970mg |
The fried appetizers deliver very little protein for their calories. Country Fried Pickles carry 82g of fat and 10g of protein.
