Publix Italian Sub: Calories & Nutrition
Publix publishes the Italian Sub as components, one chart per bread, cheese, and condiment, never a combined total. A standard half (Genoa salami, ham and cappy base, Italian 5 Grain, provolone, sub dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion) is about 765 cal, 30g protein, 54g carbs, 46.5g fat, and 1,710mg sodium.
Assembled from Publix's published components; Publix publishes no combined sub total. “<1 g” items count as 0, so carbs and protein may run a little higher.
Every italian sub includes the Sub Base (Genoa salami, tavern ham, cappy): 200 cal, 16g protein, 980mg sodium per half.
Our defined standard build, not a Publix figure. It sums Publix's published half-sub components.

The cured meat is where it starts heavy
Genoa salami, ham, and cappy make the base 200 calories, 14g fat, and 980mg sodium on a half, close to double the Ultimate Sub's meat on all three. Before bread or cheese, the Italian starts richer and much saltier. The meat is the one part of this sub you can't lighten with a swap.
The condiment is the biggest lever you can pull
Buttermilk ranch is 410 calories, mayo 220, sub dressing 200, chipotle gourmaise 180. Spicy mustard is 15 and yellow mustard 20. That single choice swings the sub by almost 400 calories, and it matters more here because the cured-meat base is already high.
Sodium is the number to watch
The base is 980mg and Italian 5 Grain bread adds 440, so you're at 1,420mg before any cheese or sauce, on a half sub, against a 2,300mg daily reference. Cheese and condiments push it further, and a whole roughly doubles it. Swiss (15mg) over white American and a mustard over mayo are the moves that hold it down.
Free swaps that actually change the numbers
Swiss cheese is 15mg of sodium against white American's 270mg, for the same 80 calories and similar protein, a 255mg saving for nothing. Whole wheat bread over Italian 5 Grain saves 50 calories and brings 5g of fiber against 3g. Neither changes the sandwich much.
Make it a salad
Dropping the bread for a lettuce or spinach base takes 220 to 260 calories off and cuts most of the carbs, while the meat, cheese, and toppings carry over. On a sub this calorie-dense, it's the biggest single cut available.
The high-protein build
Stacked for protein, a half reaches 50g: the base is 16g, double meat adds another 16g, whole wheat brings 12g, and swiss adds 6g, for about 700 calories and 2,225mg sodium before toppings. Good protein for the calories, with the cured-meat sodium as the cost.
Half vs whole
Publix only publishes the half sub. Whole-sub numbers here double the bread, meat, cheese, and extras, which scale cleanly, while the condiment is held at its published serving. A whole standard Italian lands near 1,330 calories and 3,320mg sodium.
FAQ
How many calories are in a Publix Italian Sub?
Publix doesn't publish a combined total. A standard half sub (salami-ham-cappy base, Italian 5 Grain, provolone, sub dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion) is about 765 calories; a whole is about 1,330 (doubled from the half). The condiment and cheese move that by a few hundred calories.
How much sodium is in a Publix Italian Sub?
About 1,710mg for a standard half, and roughly 3,320mg for a whole. The cured-meat base and bread alone are 1,420mg on a half. Swiss cheese and mustard-based condiments keep it lowest.
Italian Sub or Ultimate Sub at Publix?
The Ultimate is lighter. Its ham, turkey, and roast beef base is 110 cal and 650mg sodium; the Italian's Genoa salami, ham, and cappy is 200 cal and 980mg. Everything else on the two subs is identical, so a standard Italian half runs about 90 calories and 330mg sodium above the Ultimate.
What is the lowest-calorie way to order the Italian Sub?
Make it a salad or take whole wheat, skip cheese or choose swiss, and use spicy or yellow mustard instead of a mayo-based spread. That keeps a half in the 400 to 450 calorie range while holding the cured-meat protein.
